Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, MP, said today that necessary laws for downloading of foreign channels would be enforced.
He was speaking to a delegation of television owners, under the banner of "Media Unity," led by its president, Mozammel Haq Babu of Ekattor Television called on him this afternoon.
The media owners raised the issue of local advertisements going abroad and alleged that they were paid for by laundered money. They also said that the Bangladeshi advertisements were beamed by special programs aimed at the Bangladeshi market, which was very different from the local content aired. They demanded that only programmes in their original content be telecast.
They also demanded slapping of fees for downloading foreign channels and cited the example of Kolkata where one had to pay Rs 5 crore as down linking fee and Rupees 2.5 crore, annually for downloading a channel.
The minster assured them of looking into the matter.
Senior officials of the ministry and owners of leading TV channels, including Salman F Rahman of Independent TV, were also present at the meeting.
